Artist’s Statement – Penny Stewart

There is a unique character of light, a luminescence of color I see when I look upon the land. I love to capture that light and color in a way that reflects the special joy I feel when I paint. I paint secluded settings, sometimes on location. The distant barking dog, pinon smoke, and warm sunshine drift into my consciousness and onto my paper, capturing the mood of what’s around me. The early light illuminating a colorful garden, undulating pink hills under a sky of billowing clouds, and the beautiful serenity of a sunlit valley have all inspired me. I use permanent watercolor pigments to amplify the beauty inherent in the landscape. These elements do more than represent my style, they represent my soul’s response to the beauty all around us.
